For my latest illustration for the LA Times I was able to dig back to my childhood games of playing 'cowboys'. At a very young age I had the hat, fringed vest, faux six guns, and an expansive imagination. Sometime ask about how a four year old me drew my guns on an outlaw on the train at Knott's Berry Farm. I had him dead to rights (whatever that means.)
Anyway, the story I was assigned was a western short story with a fair bit of action and a nice message. I tried to recreate that in the illustration. Hooves flying, clouds of dust kicked up (even blotting out the sky!) and a mood that suggested action and adventure.
Of course, I always love to draw animals and this was a great opportunity to draw horses.
