This cover illustration was for an article on the subject of pitching stories in the ASJA Monthly magazine for writers. It seemed like a possible cliche to dress the writer as a baseball player, so I flipped it and made the editor a catcher and, why not, throw in a referee, too. And maybe more authors would like a ref with them at these meetings. Because my own editor is a fan of the Angels, the catcher is in a red uniform but with the Cardinals in the World Series, I can pretend that I planned it this way. I like it when I can come up with a solution for the article in a clever image but also do something timely for the reader when the issue comes out, in this case, the conclusion of baseball season. It was my intent to give the writer a casual confidence in what can be an intimidating situation and I think that was successful.
