The artwork I did for the 2016 Local Comic Shop Day has now been released and so I can share it. What is Local Comic Shop Day? Like the independent bookstores that unify annually to encourage small business sales, so does the association of small comics retailers have their own annual promotion. And who isn't for building small and local businesses? So I'm proud to have my poster art fit into the plan.
In total, some 550 comic book stores around the world are participating. I've gone planetary! Saturday, November 19th is the day so do go visit your local store. That's the whole point, after all.
Here are a couple more images: 3 of the preliminary roughs, and a photo of the artist looking pretty rough. Thanks to Marco Davanzo of the ComicsPRO alliance for putting this program together.
My idea was to have a monster devouring comic books with a hint of the style of Jack Kirby's "Where Monsters Dwell" comics. It is something of a self portrait as well, since as a kid I was a ravenous and omnivorous consumer of comics and graphic novels. I knew I had to work the logo into the poster, so I gamed the perspective of the background city to fit and flow with it. This was a really fun job and maybe you can see that in the rough drafts. :)
